Adult and CYP with Learning Disabilities
We have 20+ years’ experience in providing compassionate, quality care, personalised to meet individual needs. We are committed to ensuring that all service users are treated with respect and dignity and that their individual needs are met, recognising that some clients may have protected characteristics, such as age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation or marriage and civil partnership.
Unique Personnel (UK) Ltd. believe that the three key challenges for delivering homecare services to people with Learning Disabilities are as follows: –
- Access to primary and secondary healthcare, including help with medications and consent.
- Access to health promotion, such as screening, eye tests and hearing.
- Access to employment and learning opportunities
People with learning disabilities are entitled to expect the same health outcomes as everybody else. However, without the right support their disabilities may get in the way of them getting the care they need. Our team have the understanding and knowledge about how to work effectively with them ensuring reasonable adjustments are made in how they are treated. We often accompany our service users on GP appointments to provide support, not to make decisions on their behalf.
Recognising illness in someone who has a learning difficulty can also be challenging. Part of our training includes ensuring that support workers understand the significance of changes in behaviour and how to respond, including how to ensure service users get appropriate access to primary care.
Personalised Care Plans
The basis of our care starts with an appropriate care plan. Care planning involves a holistic understanding of everyone, taking into consideration their learning disability, physical and developmental needs, psychological health, social situation and emotional wellbeing.
Initial assessments are critical to preparing packages that include relevant support and activities that are tailored to each service user’s needs and preferences. Staff engage with service users and their family to get to know who they are, their history, current situation, their character, communication skills, health, attitudes, belief system and cultural background to gain a truly rounded view of how best we may support them.
